Selina is a beautiful, eighteen-year old, British born Pakistani girl. Having recently lost her father, she finds herself struggling to cope with life, and in particular with some aspects of her studies. Matters go from bad to worse for Selina, when she is raped by Zubair, a trusted family friend. He threatens to dishonour her, and her family, should she tell anyone about the attack/rape. Selina goes to extreme lengths to avoid scandal, and prevent shame being brought to her widowed mother’s door. However, as a result, Selina’s life travels down a dangerous and destructive path, which leads to the darkest days of her life, and from which there may be no return.

Abda was inspired to write the book as a result of her experiences. The community described in the novel is similar to the one in which she lived (she grew up in a very deprived, inner city area), and one in which she continues to work (her law practice is based in a very working class, multi-cultural town). She has personally seen and dealt with many of the problems that are highlighted by the novel.
